It is estimated that there are as many galaxies in the universe as there are stars in a galaxy. A galaxy has about 10^12 stars and so the universe has about 10^24 stars. If we assume a neuron is about one micron across, 10^24 neurons would occupy a cube 10^8 microns on a side, that's a cube 100 meters on a side. I've been accused of having a big head, but not a cube 100 meters on a side. :-) Hmmm... I've also been called a blockhead but I think that was for another reason. I think the it is the number of connections between neurons, the synapses, that is the truly astronomical number. |

Thank you for all your postings so far, but still no definitive
answer. What reference material is available to point me in the right direction ? (I'm not a scientist/boffin anymore but a longhaul pilot. I once saw a UFO over Hungary - turns out quite a few of my pilot buddies have seen unexplainable objects in the sky too. However, thats all beside the point.) |

Message 9 in this thread had a link to an excellent article with probably the closest we'll get to definitive. Here's the link: http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/staff/g.../billions.html |
