Default Asteroid DA14 redux

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_4llb99lPk

Part 2 of the video is Earth-centred and shows DA14 is in orbit about the
Earth with apogee near the orbit of Venus. It looks like it's coming back in
August for another close encounter, a second moon of Earth with an orbital
period of 6 months. It is currently accelerating toward the Sun but has a
lower speed than Earth. In May it will reach its closest approach to the Sun
(its perihelion and maximum speed) and lose speed as it climbs out of the
Sun's gravitational field and falls
back toward Earth. After that it could a) miss completely and return to near
the orbit of Venus, b) slingshot out of the way to a higher orbit as was
done deliberately with the Pioneer and other spacecraft , c) be captured
into a closer orbit with Earth or Moon, or c) collide.

argument I cannot laugh at I'll retire from usenet.

Let's hope it lands on London...or Jerusalem..or Tehran...or NY...but not
anywhere civilized.

The golf course at 43° 1'21.31"N, 81° 7'24.23"W is quite civilised, what
have you got against Ontarians?
An uncivilised chicken sanctuary on the outskirts of Sydney where the
crackpot thinks a tiny chunk broke off to hit Russia is much more suitable.

The quesion is, who arranged for it to hit Russia, but not where intended.

According to JPL, there is no close pass next August...

http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sst...ov=0;log=0#orb

.... and according to NASA...

http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news177.html

.... this latest pass of DA14 modified its orbit from 368 days to 317 days, so its orbit is now almost completely inside of Earth's orbit and it has had its orbital class changed from Apollo (semi-major axis 1AU) to Aten (semi-major axis 1AU); the close approach this year is the closest the asteroid will come for at least 3 decades. It is now moving faster than the Earth in its path around the Sun.

Using the orbital viewer found on the first link is pretty cool, you can change the angle at which you view the solar system and you can vary the length of the orbital steps, and you can zoom in and out.

Thanks for the info and the link, palsing. I see now that I was misled by
the tilt of the orbital plane chosen for the you-tube video, java is much
better.
So unless we believe in coincidence the Russian meteor was probably a chip
off the old block, a companion to DA14 that arrived a few hours ahead of it
and came too close.

What you ACTUALLY said and made a gigantic fool of yourself with is
QUOTE/
Meteor my arse! That was the main part of Asteroid D14 that hit Russia.
Didn't I forecast something like this?
All NASA's predictions were wrong because they were based on c rather
than c+v. This is a huge victory for ballistic light.
......but we will never be allowed to know the truth. They will tell us the
rest of it passed harmfully overhead and went on its way. No arrogant
astronomer is going to admit to being wrong all his life...There will be
a massive cover up and the Einstein conspiracy will no doubt continue...

"Unless we believe in coincidence"? That's a pretty silly statement!

The Russian meteor was unrelated to DA14. If it were part of DA14, it
would be in the same orbit, and we know that isn't the case. It is
physically impossible for them to be related, unless that relationship
extended back to a separation thousands or millions of years ago, in
which case their arrival at the same time is still a coincidence. And
there's little reason to believe they could have come from the same
parent body long ago, since the meteorites recovered are not
consistent with the spectral class of DA14.
