![]() Any news about what has happened as 'Opportunity' reached the rim at the 'Endurance' crater, Meridiani Planum? It must have been able to reached the rim and taken some images of the bottom and walls of the crater by now... Must have revealed to the operaters if it is possible to get in & out of the crater, and likewise to the scientist what kind of rock-types is exposed in the walls. Volcanics, or more of the sedimentary stuff? Is JPL not letting out anything until over the weekend? My IE session tried to open the file and then downloaded SVGView.exe from http://www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/auto/ Mind you the svg files were black, but I _could_ open them ;-) However, there are some jpegs further down the page. I liked the look of this one http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opp...0P1985R0M1.JPG (175Kb) |

![]() Thanks for those great links! Seems to mee that it could very well be possible to drive down there... But it would be a bit hard to get to those layers in the wall on the opposite side. Some very high resolution pictures could reveal a lot about what has been going on here in the lake deposition times. And the exposed rocks as one drives down would also tell a similar story. So the 'exploratorium' site does indeed get even the raw images before they appear on the JPL site. |

It would probably be relatively easy to drive into the crater. Driving back out, on the other hand, is an entirely different matter. From a quick look at the panorama, I expect they will not drive very far down into the crater, if at all. The risk of being unable to drive back out will outweigh the potential for discovery. There are too many other places yet to see. |

![]() I definitely think they are the same kind of bedrock outcrops they for so long time scrutinized at the landing site - the 'Eagle' crater. They seem to be in all locations between 'Eagle' and 'Endurance' also. Sedimentary (water)/evaporites with hematite concretion nodules a.k.a. martian 'blueberries'.
