Default Star Catalogs

Is there a good link to a webpage to learn what the different star and
objects catalogs are?

I am a interested in learning a little history on them. Who made
them, when, why? What the numbers relate to in each catalog. Stuff
like that. For catalogs like the Tycho-2, Bayer, Flamsteed, HR, SAO,
GSC, NGC etc, etc......

There's something about this in my book, Celestial Objects for Modern
Telescopes; more (I think) in the preface to Sky Catalogue 2000.0. I don't
know about online links, but a Google search for "Tycho Bayer Flamsteed SAO"
might get you somewhere.

Great Thanks! Just what I was looking for. It answers my questions on
the more common catalogs.
