I have a chance to sell my StarMax 127mm, and I was thinking of buying one
of the new 8 inch dobs from orion (with the push to). Now, that its down the
decision time, I just can't decide if I want to do it.

If I keep the 127, I'll continue to have apeture fever. But, I am afraid I
may regret the sale of the StarMax scope after the fact (I rather like the
EQ mount). My wife gives me a hard time about eventually saving for another
scope. So, if I don't sell it, it may be a long long time before I can save
up on my own.

Anyway, I just don't know if I wanna drag such a large scope out. And, I am
wondering about the comfort level of sitting down while having the dob
tilted various ways. The EQ mount is rather comfortable most of the time
(unless I have it pointed straight up).

Thoughts?

I find it much easier to drag out my 8 inch DOB than an EQ mount, counter
weights and 5 inch scope. For the DOB, normally it is two trips, one with the
OTA, 22 lbs, and one with the base, 19 lbs. I would take it all at the same
time but the door is too narrow. First I take out the base, then the OTA, drop
it in place and I am done.

And, I am

I like it, I like being seated while viewing. Like anything new, it does take
some time to learn how to position yourself so that you are comfortable
viewing. But one good thing in my book is that that as you move the scope
higher, the eyepiece position follows.

Of course aperture fever does not stop at 8 inches, though my experience is
that the skies open up for DSOs with an 8 inch. Another option is the 10 inch
F5 scope from OPT or Hardin Optical.

Why ?

Because you won't learn the sky and they rob you of the joy of the hunt.
Face it most deep sky objects look like crap. So what is the fun. The hunt
is the fun.

I understand your reasons. Maybe for you the hunt is the fun, but not for
me. I've started out with a simple equatorially mounted scope without
electronics and I've learned enough of the sky to find my way to all of the
brightest stars and many Messier objects by heart. But with a
more-than-full-time job and two young children and less than ideal skies, I
find my DSC's make my observing sessions much more productive. For me, the
fun is in the observing, not the hunting.

Jeroen.
