If you get a chance, take a look at this month's Air & Space magazine.
There's an article on Hoot Gibson. What's very interesting is he reveals a detail of STS-27 I wasn't aware of. 85 seconds into the flight part of the nosecap from the right-hand SRB broke off and smashed into the wing. There was a lot of damage to the tiles under the wing and he feared the damage was far worse than what ground control was telling him. Upon landing he saw the damage and describes it as "massive". He apparently believes that NASA should have started to develop an on-orbit patch kit after STS-27. Anyway, interesting article. -- Greg Moore Ask me about lily, an RPI based CMC. |

I don't see this as old news at all. Gehman may have provided a
factual report on STS-27, but they fell way short in communicating the severe emotion that was coupled with the damage. I'd say the obvious conclusion is that NASA had no excuse for not having a rescue or repair plan for STS-107. And all flights between 1988-2003. Here's an online version for anyone who hasn't seen it: http://www.spaceflightnow.com/shuttl...9/090327sts27/ ~ CT From Greg Moo "Jorge R. Frank" wrote in messagenews ![]() Greg D.
