Is there a video which tracks the SRB's from separation, through chute
deployment and splash down? I've never seen anything like this on NASA television. Thanks |

Here's a montage of video from STS-120's SRBs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMWOZPW8kHA This is from STS-115 and has audio. It is from SRB-sep to splash-down. At around 2:33, you can see the launch trail "curly-q". Also, in the last few seconds, you catch the second SRB hitting the water. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iurxEhL4UM |

It's amazing video (and audio), but be sure to take some Dramamine before watching it! :-) Patty |

I noticed that the comentary never specifically announced the sep anyway
this time. They forgot all us audio only folk obviously s I gather the vis was good. You do of course still get the on board views and the srb mounted vids though. What is the hardware which drops (blasts?) off the bottom of the booster and hits the water with no chute just before the booster splashes down? Thanks |

The nozzle extension, before... http://mediaarchive.ksc.nasa.gov/ima...=KSC-2009-1870 ....extending below the aft skirt, and after... http://www.pbase.com/rod_ostoski/image/98089760 ....the orange nozzle material in the nozzle just aft of the charred material near the throat. Smaller nozzle equal lower impact loads on gimbal hardware at splashdown |

It releases the nozzle extension from the end of the booster. The rational is, impacting the water with the large nozzle extension would place excessive stress on the rest of the booster. |

That was the impression I got. It had only one chute. |

So that part is expendable unless it somehow floats. |
