Pat: Assuming the field joints of the engine can take the increased pressure of the seven segment engine burning, their really shouldn't be any difference in the way it would work as far as joints go - if there is a If the Ares SRBs will be higher in size and pressure it will affect the joints. The higher pressure will cause more lengthening of the whole SRB at ignition. If the putty fails to follow that a diaster seems certain. Of similar impact is the larger bending such a higher SRB will have. The final burn through in case of Challanger may be caused by such bending while the shuttle crossed a shear wind layer. This wind load was still inside the specs (I never heard otherwise) and only the final tip to disaster. In case of Ares-1 it may be something to be considered carefuly. But if the SRBs of Ares are not for reuse the problem may be good to fix. Just glue it together. ## CrossPoint v3.12d R ## Ares supposed to be reusable ![]() Add the violent shaking and its a recipe for disaster. sure hope they move to existing expendables for astronauts then to keep the contractors happy and the pork money going go with shuttle C for heavy lift using the existing pads what would shuttle Cs top weight capacity to orbit be? |
