Default Planets without metal cores may be bad for life

This is a bit of a continuation of this previous thread (Google Groups
link):

The previous thread was about how certain planets seem to be ideally
setup for spawning life. One of the characteristics of such a planet
(such as Earth) is that it's got a magnetic field. There was some
controversy as to how important the magnetic field is to the development
of life. This article seems to indicate that the magnetic field is
pretty important.
