Rand, don't misunderstand me. I reflect on this every year, and
posted a tribute in my blog. I meant that, personally, I felt I had
nothing to add here.

OK, well, I felt I did. At least as far as pointing to what I had to
say at my blog, and and Pajamas...

I don't get the Pajamas part, but if you felt you needed to note it,
I certainly get that part. I don't know- like Matt, I certainly noted
this occasion (and the others) privately. The NASA anniversaries
of tragedy clustered so close together are shared national tragedies.
They have been commemorated in ceremonies, and in our hearts.
Maybe I'm strange or cold. I felt no compulsion to post to this NG
about them. I also don't understand the recent need to erect roadside
shrines to people killed in car accidents, or why baseball games
needed to observe a minute of silence in the years after the World
Trade Center attacks because it was 9:11 PM. As I said, maybe
I'm strange or cold, but mourning is just a more private and personal
thing to me, I guess. I blame my Norwegian ancestry

This had nothing to do with mourning. I didn't know anyone aboard,
and mourning them should indeed be a private matter, for their family
and friends. I actually found the national outpouring of grief
somewhat repugnant, and an intrusion on those close to the lost.

To the degree that it was mourning, it was mourning all the lost
opportunities in advancing the space frontier that are symbolized by
the failure of the Shuttle program, which was simply exemplified by
what happened five years ago.

It's not just a Latino thing. You see them all over Montana as well.
And it's not recent.

....Correct. Whoever told Dale it was a "Latino thing" was full of
****. The roadside memorials have been going on since the late 60's,
when the first one was seen locally. They really started getting
widespread exposure in the 70's, when the state Highway Departments
started major crackdowns on teenage reckless driving, but they
*REALLY* came to the forefront when the Mad Mothers(*) started putting
them up for victims of drunk drivers.

(*) Personally, I do *not* support the Mad Moms. Still, I do not drink
and drive, not because I support their PMS of a cause, but because I
don't want to be *their* victim in their quest for vengeance.
