The US could easily afford the Great Society. The country went off the rails throwing money away on unsustainable suburban sprawl, highways, and the never ending quest for military supremacy.

Allowing miners, ranchers, and oil drillers access to public resources at 19th century prices sure didn't help matters either.

Johnson opted not to run for a second term because he thought there was a real chance to reach a viable peace in Vietnam. It is well established Johnson's peace effort was surreptitiously - and illegally - undermined by the Nixon camp.

We keep bobbling back and forth between one administration and another. Never any long term outlook or follow-thru, just short term programs that are then scuttled by the next administration.
