There are no colour photos from Mars as such, because the rover
doesn't have a colour camera. What it does is to take sequences
of monochrome photos with various colour filters over the lens,
so that scientists can get accurate recordings of the light
levels at different wavelengths in the subjects (which I believe
helps them to identify the composition of rocks etc.). Then, by
combining the information from different images, they produce
their 'best guess' at what the landscape would look like to a
human standing on the surface. That's why you'll see people
discussing whether the colour pics produced are "too red" etc. -
i.e. they may think that the JPL scientists haven't quite got the
colour balance right.
