You are correct with a minor altitude climb on a vast thing like the Earth.
But imagine shooting your bullet out to a distance where the Earth has
revolved enough to be going in the opposite direction at the launch point
before the object returns. ...

Hummm? Hold on...Think I talked myself into a hole here. There would be a
thousand mile per hour lateral displacement none the less. If the object
takes 12 hours to return it will return to the launch site it appears. Gonna
take a hit on this and give you the points.

Gotta think some more about the inside of that spaceball, however. (grin)
