The third stage was commonly called S-IVB (ess four bee). They ended up
in quite different places. Apollos 8 thorough 12 left their S-IVBs in a
heliocentric orbit, while Apollos 13 and beyond crashed their third
stage into the Moon--deliberately to cause seismic events of known
energy.
