After reading the story, I think the most likely possibility is that some loon
mailed flour or sugar to them, claiming it was weaponized anthrax.

They wouldn't evacuate over a computer virus, and solar observatories don't deal
in secrets (the notion of an apocalyptic solar flare is too remote to take
seriously).

If true, makes you wonder why someone would target an observatory. Unless it was some kind of enviro-kook or Indian upset. Maybe the scope is on some kind sacred land? That's been an issue with other scopes, or its presence threatened a frigging red squirrel.
