A lot of my work had pretty minimal supervision because I was rated as
a national expert and not really supervised. Still, one of my firmest
rules was "Never surprise the boss."


Been there, done that (within my own tiny domain). My version of that
rule was 'always have an explanation ready for the chain of command'.
When it came to safety, there were lines even the trusted weren't
allowed to cross.

Knew of a guy who came to believe that because he was senior and
trusted, the rules didn't entirely apply to him... So he violated
them, once. The boat ended up with a primary *and* backup system down
and the reactor SCRAMed in the middle of the ocean. He ended up
junior and a guest in the brig on his way out of the Navy.
