A dark energy could make objects move apart. But how could it make space expand? The idea of expanding space is often appealed to as an explanation. But how a form of energy could act on space to make it expand goes unexplained. In fact, science has nothing to explain energy acting on space in any way, except to theoretically warp it. How do they know that expansion is not a fundamental property of all space? Then no dark energy needs be appealed to.
