Well, no, they weren't like SpaceX at all. In the beginning of space
exploration the mantra was "Waste anything but time". Hardly the
approach of SpaceX.


Agreed. Because of that mantra, the transportation architecture was
developed to get to the moon a.s.a.p. Unfortunately, that same
transportation architecture proved to be too expensive to sustain and
its funding was cut well before the Apollo 11 successfully landed on the
moon.

SpaceX has always been focused on building a low cost, sustainable,
transportation architecture.
