I have used DS200x (multiple versions) for observational purposes, and
Starry Night for planetarium purposes.
The difference is that DS is used to plan, observe and then record
observations, while SN is used to begin planning...

Think of it like this:
1. Start SN to find out (for a time and place) what will be the night's
target (constellation, direction).
2. Start DS to list all objects of a certain criteria (Gx, Dbl, etc.)
within the consteallation(s).
3. Create plan with locator maps if necessary.
4. Observe.
5. Record observations in DS.
