I think he knows that, and this is an attempt at sarcasm on his part.

Some might say, though, that this natural occurrence was caused by a
beneficent God temporarily protecting us from the consequences of our
poor stewardship of the Earth. But then a solar maximum will come -
fortunately, coinciding with the part of the Pacific Decadal
Oscillation that lowers world temperatures naturally.

Eventually, though, the day of reckoning will come. If we don't get
fossil fuel use and CO2 emissions under control before the natural
cycles start making things worse instead of better.

Natural cycles exist; human behavior also exists and has consequences.
