The best deep sky instruments are a quality pair of 8x40 binoculars and a nice warm coat.

One can only -detect- some deep sky objects in binos, but even 3-inch scope will show detail, not to mention split doubles, and show some detail in planets. Also, even small binos shake. My cheapo table-top Dob does not shake and neither did my first telescope.
