Newton only had a vague idea of gravity.
Therefore fact he was the first
to be able to calculate possible trajectories
with usage of the infinitesimal calculus he developed*
had to be a famous success.

It was used routinely by many astronomers
( often months of manual calculations ) before Gauss.
