As long as there is a super collider, US dominance really does not make much
a difference.
But there isn't a supercollider, compared to the SSC. It would have
been much more powerful than CERN's LHC. "In 1993 Congress canceled a
program to build an accelerator, the Superconducting Super Collider,
that would have greatly extended the range of masses of new particles
that might be created, perhaps including the particles of dark matter.
The European consortium CERN has picked up this task, but its new
accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, will be able to explore only
about a third of the range of masses that could have been reached by
the Super Collider..." ‹Steven Weinberg, Nobel Laureate in Physics in
his third book of essays, "Third Thoughts."
