So, why not just use asteroid for space craft by attaching a few
rocket engine to it, drill a few caves inside for habitat for
humans. Body of asteroid can give shielding against cosmic radiation
and some gravity too?

There is no gravity to speak of on an small asteroid.

But there is one point that hasn't been addressed.

The highly elongated shape of the object has been inferred from its
brightness changes on the assumption that it has more or less uniform
albedo. But if it had one side with shiny panels then it might much less
elongated and just catching the sunlight from our point of view.
