NASA does a great deal right. One of those is not limiting itself to
space exploration, but following its original charter, which is about
aerodynamics, space, and Earth science.

Instead of actively engaging with the planet's two distinct day/night cycles and specifically the polar day/night cycle at the respective North and South poles with its distinct rotational cause, this is what NASA does with its satellites !!.

The relationship between the motions of the Earth, your experience of it via Earth sciences should be the centrepiece of research but it isn't and hasn't been that way for centuries. However brilliant NASA has been with engineering sciences, it too is no better or worse than the academic institutions when it comes to that area where planetary motions in a Sun centred system meet Earth sciences.
