Dont bother
with parachutes or such nonsense, re-using them was always more for PR
than for any savings.
It was actually for safety, so engineers could examine them
post-launch, spot problems and take corrective actions.

yeah they were very proactive before challenger
reuse sounded nice, and added safety risks.
