I'm inclined to believe Rod and Jon that the scope is nothing fancy, but
you might be able to track down the folks who originally sold it and see
if the story checks out (for what it's worth). The only serius scope
dealer in Boulder during that time was a store called Startracker (at
least I think that was the name). They fell off the map sometime in the
90s, but Cathy at S&S Optika in Denver (303) 789 - 1089 might know how
you can get in touch with the original owners.

Boulder is "far out" but not that far out;-)

He said that the dealer had told him that Celestron had made them to the
stores specs, and that it had a Byear(?) gear system installed instead of
the "standard" gear system.

I don't know if this makes any sense to anyone.
