Leslie C. Peltier Historical Marker in Delphos
Several years ago I was on my way home from Apollo Rendezvous in Dayton, Ohio
and passed through Delphos.
Having read Starlight Nights, I always admired Leslie Peltier and thought it
would be nice to stop in his hometown.
At the time there was a marker or memorial in front of the library in Delphos
(is this new memorial a rededication or an entirely new marker?).
As a curiosity I we looked up his name in the Delphos phone book and were
surprised to see his name still listed. Only a few blocks away was his house
so we went to find it just to see if there was anything of his observatories
still standing. They were there but had fallen into disrepair. Wanting to get
some pictures, we asked a woman we saw working in the yard if we could go to
the observatory and photograph it. She told us we needed to ask Mrs. Peltier
(Leslie's wife, still living there) for permission.
Mrs. Peltier was home and when we knocked to ask for permission she was kind
enough to invite us in (total strangers) and sat and visited with us for about
a half hour. I was actually sitting there in Leslie Peltier's house.
Mrs. Peltier was a very nice woman and if Leslie was anything like her must
have been a wonderful person as well as a great amateur astronomer.
It was one of the most memorable astronomy experiences I have ever had.
