The only ways they can be compared is by payload/cost. As the
costs of the Ares are not known, we cannot do a comparison; that's
one of the (several) problems I'm having with the Ares program -
there are no published figures for launch cost - even for the
proposed commercial version.

The NASA report has estimates of relative costs along with other factors
like payload and predicted reliability.
