The concept of legions of deities is quite common in pre-Hebrew
religions.
The Romans had Lares and Penates - household deities that were unique
to each dwelling. They were the spirits of ancestors who had
undergone apotheosis. How many ancestors did the Romans count? The
only reason the Romans didn't have 60 million deities is because they
couldn't count that high.
The Hindus *could* count that high, and there are many more than 60
million of them.
