Presumably a spiral galaxy, but what's the bright blue region at upper left
of it? Part of the galaxy, or something else?

Either a star forming region or a dwarf galaxy. It doesn't look like
a merger
because there is not much deformation in the principal's disk.

Things are pretty iffy in these small galaxies.
