Digging around, I came up with an interesting shot of the site taken
from lunar orbit during the Apollo 15 mission. The orientation and
lighting are not too dissimilar.

do you think, that with better equipment and a series of pictures it
were possible to obtain the last picture with its details also from the
Earth surface?
Excellent indeed. I don't suppose it would be possible to match the
Apollo photo from the Earth. It would at least require a large
telescope, a very good sky, much luck, and probably many exposures.
Nonetheless, to my eye Mr. Lawrence's photos do not suffer very much in
comparison to the Apollo photo.
