Santiago de Cuba Hit by 6.1 Earthquake

SANTIAGO DE CUBA.— An earthquake registering 6.1 on the Richter scale was
felt in the eastern Cuban city of Santiago at 3:56 p.m. Sunday afternoon; at
press time no injuries had been reported.

While seismic activity is not new to this region of the country, tremors are
always a shock to residents. On this occasion, many, in the middle of
watching the Cuban Baseball League All-Star Game, quickly ran out of their
homes.

Maj. Hernan Nieves Moya, who heads the provincial civil defense, told Granma
that the center of the earthquake was located at sea, 157 kilometers (98
miles) south of the city of Manzanillo, Granma at 19.56 degrees North
Latitude and 78.46 West Longitude and at a sea depth of 25 kilometers.

Nieves said the location of the quake put it west, southwest of Cabo Cruz,
Niquero and 82.5 kilometers from the coastline. The tremor was felt in all
of Cuba’s eastern provinces from Camaguey to Guantanamo.

Early information said no injuries or material damage was reported in the
province of Santiago de Cuba.

The event had Santiago residents recalling he last major earthquake that
took place 75 years ago on February 3. The National Center of Seismology
Research was established in this city on that same day 15 years ago.
