Default NBC Apollo 11 coverage -- prescient?

Doug... wrote...
In the very early moments of the Apollo 11 EVA coverage, the commentators
make note of the curve of the horizon and spoke of how close it was, only
a mile and a half. Then Frank McGee (IIRC) said "Can you imagine hitting
a golf ball on the moon?" The other man, who I haven't identified, said
"It would soar right over that horizon, I bet," or words to that effect.

Well, they were prescient in talking about a golf ball being hit on the
moon at some point, but not about how far it would travel...

If Al Shepard was wearing plaid golf pants and shirt sleeves, rather than 11
layers including rubber, spandex, nylon, aluminised mylar, neoprene coated
nylon, dacron, urethane coated nylon, orthofabric, betacloth, water
transport tubing... he might have got a better shot
