I once researched the 'invisibility' legend.

It turned out that there are records of the British, circa early
1930's, used an external electrical apparatus to make a man invisible
and then brought him back to the visible. One year later the Canadians
did the same thing.

It was the next year -- 1935 I believe -- that the United States
launched a 'feasibility study' into the possibility of invisibility.
This study was given to the University of Chicago.

It took until 1939, but the University of Chicago finally confirmed,
mathematically, that invisibility was possible. Their mathematics and
conclusions were turned over to the Institute of Advanced Studies
located next to Princeton University.

In 1939 the news media was invited to witness a toy sailboat disappear
using an external electrical apparatus. It was written up in the media
and photographed. This was as far as open documentation will go. And,
today, it is difficult to find.

The 'feasibility study' was funded by Congress so it was publicized in
the open for funding purposes. Things were out in the open back in
1935 and even in 1939. After that WWII had it's effect.

The "Philadelphia Project" or more accurately "Project Rainbow" is
legend with nothing I could find to verify it one way or the other.
