How did the dullest and most mean spirited people on the planet
inherit the most vibrant astronomical heritage and turn it into dismal
gossip ! .The closest thing I have seen to this was the administration
of prisons in the 19th century and the discovery that to inflict
dullness on people is a great way to maintain pseudo-authority.
"To scrutinize into the punishment records of Port Arthur men is to
look into a microcosm of bureaucratic tedium. Its horror comes not from
unrestrained cruelty (as the Gothic legends and popular horror stories
of the place insisted) but rather from its opposite, the mechanical
apportioning of strictly metered punishments designed to wear each
prisoner down into bovine acceptance - Arthur's criterion of moral
reform. It is like looking into the memory of some dull god
interminably counting fallen sparrows on his fingers" Fatal Shores
,Port Arthur prison.
The great thing about Christianity is that it recognised mediocrity or
'lukewarmness 'as its only enemy, pity astronomy could not defend itself
from against the formal cult which promotes mediocrity -empiricism.

NEW ASTRONOMY MAGAZINE FOR AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS - PRACTICAL ASTRONOMER
Any chance of us knowing who is writing for this? Nothing said about it
(that I could find) on the web site. The domain name
(practicalastronomer.com) is registered to Eddie Guscott, whose
astrophotography ISTR coming across.
Best,
Stephen
