Default viewing the moon

I am new to astronomy and I am using a 5 year old Meade Saturn
telescope.
I viewed the moon last night with a 12.5mm and then with a 2xbarlow.
The 12.5 view was good, so I decided to get more detail.

Unfortunately, it seems that with the Barlow, the view is too detailed-
similar to looking under a microscope. Suggestions for getting the
best detailed view of the moon?

Also, I live in the northeast US in new England. Suggestions for other
sky viewing?
