What are those numbers that appear in the lower left-hand corner of the
"movie" frames? They look like frame numbers, but they are wildly out
of order. Does that mean that the frames are shown out of order and
that, therefore, they have been selected to produce a misleading
sequence?

I just double-checked all the animated gifs on that page to check your
claim. Each gif's frame numbers are monotonically increasing, except
where the frame number rolls back over to zero. No frame numbers
are "out of order"; some numbers are just skipped.
