in for the extra bucks and bennies, the little the Guard asks in
return was considered not very onerous.


True, but...


It never occurred to them that being in the military meant that...
one might have to actually to the job they signed up to do.


The flip side of that is that it never occurred to them that they might
be sent to invade a country that *didn't* attack us. The guys at the top
have not just the obligation to send the military into harm's way when
necessary, but also to sent the military into harm's way *only* if
necessary.
