Wrong, we did not "define" that, we determined that experimentally.

Wrong, we did not define that, we derived that mathematically from the
general equation E^2 = p^2 c^2 + m^2 c^4.


Rather, that was another way to get to the same result known from
classical electromagnetism. Either way, a theoretical conclusion with
experimental validation, not a definition.
