Thanks for the replies! Indeed, it did appear that I just picked a bad
day
(servers down) to try out Boinc --- as this morning it popped fully to
life.
All the installed projects are now running just fine.

Still some weird minor quirks and definetly things on the "wish list".
At
the top of "wish list" would be the ability to use a resume password with
Boinc running as a screensaver. From deja and googles, I take it this
isn't
supported -- even with Boinc 4.25? It allows the screensaver's password
box to be checked/enabled, but when the screensaver runs the password box
fails to appear. (Screen just goes entirely black.) This effectively
locks you out -- only thing you can do is power cycle.
