Lukas, my six year old son asked me yesterday, how the cosmonauts entered
the Voshkhod 2 spacecraft, when the inflatable airlock was in front
of the hatch...
He literally asked you that?
Yep. Some time ago, he asked why there is no sonic boom as light
travels at a speed faster than the speed of sound through the air...
Or why the earth is rotating but he doesn't feels any vertigo... Or
why Mercury and Venus don't have moons...
Last year, in a museum he saw a B-17 ball turret on display, hanging
down from the ceiling: "Daddy, why do they exhibit the pod from "2001"
here?"
Damn, what a smart kid. Congratulations.
Thanks. Currently, he is pretty much focused on Mars (I love
the ways he says "Opportunity") but also often wants to discuss
the Saturn-Apollo abort modes and their rationales with me.
His favourite picture book is "Virtual Apollo" and he asks
every now and then for "Virtual LM"...
But smartness can also be a problem. One day, when he played
with his LEGO spacecrafts all over the flat, I asked him to
stay in his room, as I was a little bit tired. What did he say?
"Daddy, you always tell me that space is very, very, very big,
and so my room isn't big enough for playing spaceflight only there!"
Here's the little geek in his space-corner:
