I keep hearing that Jupiter through Neptune are gas planets. What does
that mean? Are they really not solid anywhere?
A misnomer harking back to the days when it was thought that they were
gas throughout. The current models consist of liquids in various states
surrounding a rocky metallic core.
The interesting speculation was Jupiter having 'squoze' carbon at it's
core, under unbelievable pressures, into a core of diamond. Fun stuff.
