Aovely description; many thanks.
Makes sense to me, so I'll look closer,
Try harder, to adjust view for you --
For the vast blue yonder and tiny specks,
Pinpricks that are stars.
A stencil pattern my fuzzy blanket
Dancing in the heavenly dome,
A constellation of stories arching me
Over the sky. Just connect the dots
At Grande Central. It's the Astrodome.
Meet me on Track 8.
But should I take the long,
Or the short train?
I'll be looking on both sides of the track for you.
Homeward bound! Bring my hound
To the station...

You seem very certain - have you ever considered that you might be
wrong?
Did you READ the article? The well makes it more difficult.

I read the bit that said
"Surprisingly, you can actually see a few stars or planets in daytime"
and
"you can see the planets Venus, Saturn and Jupiter in the daytime, and
even bright stars such as Sirius and Canopus"
Shouldn't I have read those bits? :-)
I understand what the guy is saying as regards contrast perception and
the like, but I don't believe its the whole story.
When looking at a uniform blue sky, the eye does not always
accommodate at infinity as you might expect, so that any stars
observed would be out of focus and not appear as a distinct pinpoint.
However, if the star's image is close to a feature that the eye is
already focussed on then it is much more likely to be perceived.
Certainly in my own experience, if I'm out looking for the first
'evening star' as summer twilight falls I'm much more likly to pick
ones out that are close to contrails or wispy clouds. I also have
'seen' the image of a star on a clear sky pop into focus as my eye
accommodates.
So I think its perfectly reasonable to posit that observing from the
bottom of a well or chimney can actually assist in the observation of
stars in daytime, by pre-setting the eye close to the right focus
position.
