I shoulda been a forecaster. It stalled and weakened to a cat 1/2 DUD as I
suspected.

Consider this scenario: There is a propane tank near your home and it
springs a leak. The emergency crews say that if it blows, it could
take out your entire house.

1) If it blows and takes out only 1/2 of your house instead of the
whole house, would you consider it a dud?

2) Even if you predict that it will only take out 1/2 of your house,
would you stick around to find out?

3) If a category 1 "dud" hung out over your house for 3 days, would
you be able to observe planets and star clusters through the cloud
ceiling?

In 1995, the forecasters erred on hurricane Marilyn, but in the other
direction: conservatively. The devastation was unreal. It was "only"
category 3, yet it left 1/3 of St. Thomas homeless, destroyed 1/2 the
schools and our only hospital, and turned one steel framed building
into a heap of twisted scrap metal.

(bows to the adoration ..thankyou thankyou)

I understand that weather forecasting is not an exact science. When
you second-guess the meteorologists, you're bound to be right at least
some of the time. But don't expect me to come to you for my next
weather forecast.

Sorry if i sound cranky. Half of my extended family lives in the path
of this monster. The other half is now looking anxiously at Ivan.
Please excuse me while i go listen to the weather report.
