To my untrained eye, it resembles a mass of decayed vegetation.
Unfortunately, it appears to be on a fairly steep slope that might be
inaccessible to the rover.

Do you mean the large black rock? Well, you know the drill, it's probably
just a rock, volcanic. Are you ready for Solar conjunction, no images for 2
weeks because Mars will go behind the sun?
