I myself fried two modems, each the same way - I unplugged the power cord,
but failed to unplug the phone line... :-( The summer storms are very
dangerous concerning thunder (both my modems died in the summer). Turns out
that the second time it happened, it not only destroyed the modem, but the
phone cable also! Must have been quite an electrical current there...
Anyway, I've learned my lesson - whenever I smell a storm out there,
off-line I go :-)
