Actually, I wouldn't say that they defy explanation, as there have been
several theories proposed to account for them. One involves perturbations

by
one of the two shepherding satellites Pandora and Prometheus, which is
probably the most promising. Another is the existance of a smaller but as

of
yet undiscovered moon. Probably, when Cassini gets closer and studies the
F-ring in more detail, we will get more information to determine what is

going
