I purchased a laser and an Orion collimation eyepiece, and when I looked
through the site tube, things didn't look right

I think that it is probably a sight tube, unless you rode a tube to the site.
In any case, use of a laser collimator requires that you FIRST collimate IT!
The "No-tools" collimation page has been cited many, many times on this NG and
should have sufficed.
