Just an opinion, without solid basis:
Some of the patterns on the Martian surface, as well as how the soil seems to
act, makes me think of statically-charged particles.
Perhaps the Spirit and other craft will give us better insight into what seems
like patterns made by flowing water and moisture in the sands.....
